Day 5: Grafts Anchoring & Returning to Routine
Around day 5, grafts are substantially more anchored than they were on surgery day, swelling has typically resolved, and many patients return to desk work. You’re not cleared for exercise, hats without clinic approval, or scab-picking — but the fragile phase is winding down.
What to expect
- Face back to normal as swelling completes its exit
- Scabs beginning to lift at the edges on their own
- Donor area comfortable enough to sleep on for some patients (ask your clinic)
How to care for it
- Maintain daily washes; some clinics increase lather contact time now
- Still no gym, saunas, pools, or heavy lifting
- If you must go out, a very loose clinic-approved cap is usually acceptable from around now
Is this normal?
- Normal Edges of scabs whitening and lifting
- Normal Numb areas persisting
- Ask your clinic New swelling appearing at this stage
Contact your clinic promptly if you notice
- New-onset swelling, heat, or pain at day 5+ is not the normal pattern — check with your clinic
Frequently asked questions
When are hair transplant grafts fully secure?
Grafts anchor progressively: meaningfully secure around days 5–7 and generally considered firmly set by days 10–14. Most clinics lift the strict no-touch rules in stages across that window, which is why wash instructions get progressively less cautious.
Can I go back to work 5 days after a hair transplant?
Desk work, yes — many people return between days 3 and 7 depending on visibility comfort. Physical jobs need longer (typically 10–14 days) and clinic sign-off.
