Months 2–3: The “Ugly Duckling” Phase
Months 2–3 are the "ugly duckling" phase: shedding is done, growth hasn’t started, and the mirror shows roughly what you had before surgery. Under the surface, follicles are completing their rest cycle and building new hair. There is no intervention that speeds this up — only time.
What to expect
- A stable, quiet scalp that looks pre-surgical
- Occasional small pimples as new hairs begin pushing toward the surface (often first signs of growth!)
- Redness fully resolved for most skin tones by month 2–3
How to care for it
- Normal hair care is fine now — cuts, most products, hats, sun with reasonable protection
- Hair dye is commonly cleared from around weeks 4–6; confirm with your clinic
- Keep the monthly photo habit
Is this normal?
- Normal No visible change for weeks at a time
- Normal Tiny whiteheads where new hairs surface
- Ask your clinic Widespread painful pustules
Contact your clinic promptly if you notice
- A few small pimples = new hair surfacing. Many painful ones = possible folliculitis, which clinics treat easily when caught early
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal to see no growth 3 months after a hair transplant?
Yes. Month 3 is typically the turn, not the destination — many patients see their first new hairs between months 3 and 4, and slower responders at month 5. Growth then compounds monthly through month 12.
What are the small pimples on my transplant area?
Usually new hairs breaking through the skin, occasionally trapping oil on the way (mild folliculitis). Warm compresses help; don’t squeeze. If they multiply, hurt, or persist, have your clinic look at photos.
